The Barbarians invaded in the 5th century, and remained until the beginning of <strong>the 8th century with the arrival of the Arab armies and the start of the long Muslim period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row unlock_row_content=&#8221;yes&#8221; row_height_percent=&#8221;0&#8243; override_padding=&#8221;yes&#8221; h_padding=&#8221;0&#8243; top_padding=&#8221;0&#8243; bottom_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; overlay_alpha=&#8221;50&#8243; gutter_size=&#8221;3&#8243; shift_y=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_gallery el_id=&#8221;gallery-143924&#8243; type=&#8221;carousel&#8221; medias=&#8221;3788,3789,3790,3791,3792,3793&#8243; carousel_lg=&#8221;3&#8243; carousel_md=&#8221;3&#8243; carousel_sm=&#8221;1&#8243; gutter_size=&#8221;1&#8243; media_items=&#8221;media|lightbox|original&#8221; carousel_interval=&#8221;3000&#8243; carousel_navspeed=&#8221;400&#8243; carousel_loop=&#8221;yes&#8221; carousel_nav=&#8221;yes&#8221; single_overlay_opacity=&#8221;50&#8243; single_h_align=&#8221;center&#8221; single_padding=&#8221;2&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row unlock_row=&#8221;&#8221; row_height_percent=&#8221;0&#8243; override_padding=&#8221;yes&#8221; h_padding=&#8221;0&#8243; top_padding=&#8221;0&#8243; bottom_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; overlay_alpha=&#8221;50&#8243; equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; gutter_size=&#8221;0&#8243; shift_y=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_column_text]Although remains proving that Prehistoric man lived on the present site of Moj\u00e1car have been uncovered, we also know that<strong> between the 6th and 7th centuries AD and until the mid 13th century<\/strong>, the town, first a Visigoth, and then a Muslim settlement, <strong>was located in what is known today as Moj\u00e1car la Vieja<\/strong> with its pyramid-shaped hillock, the Montem Sacrum, next to the river Aguas, a river which supplied one of the most<strong> impressive surviving cisterns dating from the Kingdom of Granada<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1488 <strong>the mayors of the entire area gathered to surrender to the Catholic Monarchs, with the exception of the Mayor of Moj\u00e1car<\/strong>. Captain Garcilaso de la Vega was therefore sent to the fountain to speak to Alabez (Moj\u00e1car\u2019s Mayor at that time), who explained his reasons for not surrendering:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI am as Spanish as you when my race has been living in Spain for more than 600 years, and you tell us to go. I have never raised arms against the Christians. I therefore believe it\u2019s fair that you treat us like brothers, not like enemies, and that you allow us to continue working our land.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>He added:<strong> \u201cBefore handing myself over like a coward, I will die like a Spaniard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the middle of the 19th century a rich seam of silver was discovered in Sierra Almagrera<\/strong>, creating greater wealth and an increase in the population of Moj\u00e1car and the surrounding area.
